You could demand the use of OEM parts, but in many cases, you'll end up paying the difference, which can be quite high depending on the level and severity of the damage.
However, if you happen to live in a no fault state or you were not at fault in the accident you were involved in you can often stipulate to the insurance company picking up the tab on your repair bill that only OEM parts are to be used.
The issue is with older cars because older cars can prove to be a little more of a challenge to get repaired. However, outside of a classic car or a car that is no longer in production, there are still plenty of OEM parts available for older model cars. It may take longer to find a specific part, but your mechanic should be able to locate any parts associated with an older but popular model car.
If you think that an accident with an older car means your car, regardless of how light the damage, will be considered a total loss, you might want to think again. In many cases, this is what happens. However, if your insurance company deems the car repairable, then you need to understand that there are car parts out there, whether it is a front grill or car panels. It could be easy to find them and it could take time depending on whether you demand OEM or after market parts, but regardless, the parts are available.
