How Do I Look After My Vinyl Wrapped Car?

First of all, if you are unsure about car wrapping please read this article 'What is car wrapping?'.

Car vinyl wrapping has recently been used to change the colour of cars. Vinyl wrapping has many advantages over the traditional method of painting, such as quicker turnaround, smaller cost and the wrap can be removed to reveal the cars original colour. Although it may look very similar to a traditional painted vehicle, there are some small precautions you should take while washing your car.

One of the most common questions we get asked is 'How do I look after my vinyl wrapped car?'. Some wrapping companies tend to mislead customers by advising them that the wrap will last forever, this is simply not true. You can expect the vinyl wrap to last anything between 5-7 years. A vinyl wrap is effectively a large sticker carefully fitted to your vehicle and as you may know stickers can tend to lift up at the edges, especially if you are not careful whilst washing your car.

We suggest that you do not use the automatic machine car washes and instead use hand car washes. We are not short of these in the UK! If you go to a hand car wash, simply advise the staff at the car wash that your vehicle has a vinyl wrap and not to go too close with a powered jet wash. We would recommend that they do not go any closer than 1ft (12inches) with a handheld jet wash.

Special care and attention is due if using any cleaning chemicals, always test the cleaning chemical on a small area first to make sure that the cleaning chemical does not damage the vinyl. This also applies to wax and polishes. Although generally the vinyl can be polished, we would always recommend that you test the polish first. You should also ask the wrapping company for a small sample of the vinyl used on your car, so that you can use it as a test piece.

Also try to avoid using machine polishers. Machine polishers tend to be too aggressive for vehicle wraps, you may risk damaging the vinyl. This also applies to abrasive materials. Abrasive materials will damage the wrap so steer clear from these.

Any good wrapping company will have cleaning products available to take care of your vinyl wrapped car. Be sure to check what products are available. If you have any more questions regarding taking care of your vinyl wrapped car simply send me an email and ill do my best to answer.
